Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our programs, process, and approach.

Beyond STEM Future Lab serves motivated students in grades 8 through 12 who want to go beyond traditional academics. Our students are curious, ambitious young people who want to build something meaningful — whether that's a research paper, an AI product, a community initiative, or a creative portfolio. We work with students across all academic levels, from those who are just beginning to explore their interests to those ready to launch advanced projects.
Three key differentiators set us apart: (1) Community-connected projects — every student's work addresses real challenges in their community, not hypothetical exercises; (2) AI integration — students learn to use AI as a practical tool throughout their work, gaining skills that are increasingly essential; (3) Personalized mentorship — led by Dr. Dai, a Ph.D. researcher who understands student motivation deeply, with expert mentors matched to each student's interests. Unlike typical research programs that produce isolated academic papers, our students build tangible outcomes that demonstrate genuine initiative and real-world impact.
No prior experience is required. Our mentorship is designed to meet students where they are. The Exploration Program is specifically designed for students who are curious but unsure where to start. In the AI Product Track, students learn to build AI-powered tools without needing prior coding experience — our mentors provide the technical frameworks and guidance. What matters most is curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn.
The Core Mentorship Program consists of 10 sessions (75-90 minutes each), typically completed over 10 to 16 weeks. The Exploration Program is 3 sessions. Project Extension Pathways add-ons are 3 additional sessions each. The pace is flexible and adapts to the student's schedule and the complexity of their chosen project. Some students complete their work in one semester, while others continue over a longer period through Advanced Mentorship.
Every student completes the program with tangible, portfolio-ready deliverables. Depending on their track, these may include: a published research paper, an AI product MVP with a pitch deck, a community impact report with verified service hours, a professional portfolio, or any combination through our Project Extension Pathways add-ons. Beyond deliverables, students develop critical thinking, leadership, public speaking, project management, and AI literacy skills that strengthen both their college applications and their personal growth.
All mentors undergo a rigorous selection process. We recruit from graduate programs, early-career professionals, and industry experts with a demonstrated passion for education. Every mentor completes a background check and a structured onboarding program that covers the Beyond STEM pedagogy, milestone system, and communication standards. We prioritize mentors with expertise in high-demand areas: AI/ML, product design, research methodology, media production, public policy, and community organizing. Mentors participate in regular check-ins and professional development.
We are committed to making innovation education accessible. While we are currently in the early stages, we are actively building a scholarship program and have plans to establish a nonprofit arm dedicated to equitable access. If cost is a concern, we encourage you to mention it during your consultation — we want to work with families to find solutions whenever possible. We also offer pilot cohort pricing and occasional promotional rates.
Both options are available. We offer 1:1 individual mentorship for students who want personalized attention, as well as small cohort programs (3-5 students) where students work on related projects alongside peers. In cohort programs, students develop collaboration and leadership skills while still producing individual deliverables. The right format depends on the student's learning style and project goals — we help you decide during the consultation.
The best indicator of readiness is curiosity. If your student has interests they want to explore more deeply, questions about the world they want to investigate, or a desire to build something meaningful — they are ready. We don't require specific academic achievements or test scores. The Exploration Program is specifically designed for students who are interested but unsure of their direction. During the free consultation, Dr. Dai will assess fit and recommend the most appropriate starting point.
The consultation is a free, no-commitment 20 to 30-minute conversation with Dr. Dai. During this call, she will: (1) learn about your student's interests, strengths, and goals; (2) discuss any concerns or questions you have; (3) assess which program and track would be the best fit; and (4) explain what the mentorship experience looks like in practice. There is absolutely no pressure to enroll — the consultation is about understanding your student's potential and exploring whether Beyond STEM Future Lab is the right path. We offer consultations in both English and Chinese.
